Queen Kapi`olani Birthday Commemoration

December 2006

The annual commemoration of Queen Kapiolani's birthday this past December was enriched by the presence of vocalists Malia Kaai, Andrew Maddock, Rosanna Perch, Megan Mount, Azure Skellington, and Kristin Stone, from Hawaii Opera Theatre's Mae Z. Orvis Opera Studio. Soloists were accompanied by pianist Eric Schank. Their performance in the Blue Room was reminiscent of royal musicalse hosted by King Kalakaua and Queen Kapiolani. LIke there nineteenth-century counterparts, the vocalists sang arias written by English French, German, and Italian composers. A few of these works were by composers who's works were regularly listed on Iolani Palace musical programs during the monarchy era.

Entertainers Carmen Haugen, Keith Haugen, and Frank Uehara entertained guests waiting in line. Punahou School string quartet members Jennifer Yamamoto, Michael Lim, Erica Mau, and Mark Ohara entertained visitors in the Throne Room. The Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame Serenaders -- Dr. Isaac Akuna, Kuuipo Kumukani, James "Kimo" Stone, and Joe Winchester, were featured on the makai lanai on the first evening. Palace volunteers helped visitors enjoy the evenings in various rooms throughout the Palace.
