School tours are always welcome and encouraged to visit `Iolani Palace.

We ask students, teachers and chaperones for your help with the ongoing restoration and preservation of what The Friends of `Iolani Palace have accomplished by following the School Tour Checklist and enforcing the House Rules with everyone in the tour party. Please review the rules carefully before your arrival at `Iolani Palace.

School Tour Checklist

Reservation Confirmation

Please call our Ticket Office at 522-0832 before 3:30 p.m., the day before your tour to confirm final count of students and adults for ticketing. If school tour is on Tuesday, call the Ticket Office the Friday before your tour. The Palace is closed on Monday. Cancellations must be made no later than on the week prior to your scheduled tour time.

Vehicular Access

Vehicular access is through Likelike Mall located between the Hawaii State Library and the Palace complex (see map). Buses with more than 15 passengers are not allowed on the Palace grounds. Passengers can be dropped off in front of the YWCA on Richard Street, or in front of the State Capitol on Beretania Street.

Tour Requirements

Be sure to have everyone assigned to a specific tour time. The maximum number of per elementary school is 20. The maximum number per high school tour is 15. There should be a TEACHER OR CHAPERONE FOR EACH TOUR. An additional chaperone should be available in the even that a child becomes ill or needs to leave the Palace. The chaperones are responsible for their group and the proper behavior of each student.

Proper Behaviour

`Iolani Palace reserves the right to deny admission to boisterous or unruly students.

Upon Arrival

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled tour to allow enough time to purchase tickets and secure students' large bags and backpacks. Please note that no large bags or backpacks over 16" in H/W/D must be stored in the Barracks. Storage is located in the Barracks. Check with cashier for details.

Student's Identification

Students, teachers, and chaperones are encouraged to wear nametags.

Restrooms

Restrooms are available at the Kana`aina Building. Entry ramp is on the Diamond Head side of the building. A teacher or chaperone must escort students.

Palace Shops

Students are welcome to visit the Palace shops. We ask that a teacher or adult chaperone escort students into the shops.

House Rules

  • Please refrain from eating, drinking, and gum chewing.
  • Please do not touch or lean on walls, woodwork, furniture, and drapery.
  • To preserve the flooring, all are requred to cover shoes with cloth booties. Please discourage students from sliding and skating.
  • Notes may be taken with pencils only.
  • Cameras, tap recorders, and pens are not to be used inside the Palace. Postcards of Palace interiors may be purchased in the Palace Shop at nominal cost.
  • Pagers and cell phones should be turned off for the duration of the tour.
  • No large bags or backpacks over 16" in H/W/D must be stored in the Barracks. This rule is strictly enforced.
  • Students, chaperones, and teachers must remain with assigned group at all times.
  • Adults are responsible for the group and behavior of every student. A teacher or chaperone will escort students out of the Palace if they become ill or are behaving in a disruptive manner.
  • While questions are encouraged, unnecessary noise can be disruptive to fellow students, docents, and other guests within the Palace.
  • Children under the age of 5 are not permitted on tour.
  • Dress code: no bathing suits, brief shorts, athletic tank tops, strapless or midriff tops are permitted. Gentlemen will please remove headwear while in the Palace.
