What's A Docent?

A docent is a tour guide who interprets the history of `Iolani Palace for visitors. If you would enjoy extending this kind of hospitality, feel comfortable with public speaking, and have an interest in Hawaiian history, please consider becoming a docent.

Docent Training

Docent training covers Hawaiian history with a focus on the late Monarchy period, particularly the history of `Iolani Palace, its people and its treasures. The course also includes Hawaiian cultural values, language and pronunciation, along with field trips to other historic sites and museums.

To become a docent you need forty hours of Guardian (docent aide) service and satisfactory completion of the Docent Training Course. Training also includes weekly reading assignments. A registration fee is required to cover the cost of manuals and materials.
